Watch #MommaInTheCity – City Winery Chicago Hanukkah Klezmer Brunch Buffet
One of the best parts of traveling the world, country and even your own city is experiencing food from different people, cultures and neighborhoods.
In 2013, Momma Cuisine is adding a new video series, “Momma In The City” (#MommaInTheCity), in addition to the live cooking & lifestyle show, #MCShowLIVE, that broadcasts every second Tuesday of the month at 11am CST, right here on the website.
“Momma In the City” (#MommaInTheCity) is a new video series exploring Chicago and beyond, traveling to different neighborhoods and cities throughout the country to learn and tell the stories about food straight from the chefs, artisans, farmers and home cooks!
On this episode, I visited City Winery (1200 West Randolph Street, Chicago) to experience my first Hanukkah Klezmer Brunch with my husband. It was such a treat to experience the great food, but the traditional music really helped to get us in the Hanukkah spirit.
We ate and ate and ate, and talked to our neighboring diners and learned about each other over amazing potato latkes, lox, pastrami and more!
Traveling doesn’t always mean buying airplane tickets and going to a far away land. Traveling can be as simple as venturing and experiencing new places in your town, or driving into the big city to spend the day. This is what “Momma In The City” is all about!
FROM CITY WINERY:
Every Sunday morning, the mouthwatering aroma of hot latkes intermingles with the irresistible strains of Yiddish folk music in the West Loop during City Winery Chicago’s weekly Klezmer Brunch. For the first day of Hanukkah on December 9 and the last day of Hanukkah on December 16, City Winery will set out a special Hanukkah Klezmer Brunch Buffet complete with tantalizing sufganiyot (traditional jelly doughnuts), rugelach, kugel, challah French toast, cheese blintzes with berry sauce, an “Everlasting Build Your Own Latke Bar” and a scramble station that includes herbs, pastrami and house-cured salmon. Admission of $30 includes bottomless mimosas and Bloody Marys in addition to the concert ticket and food (half price for 12 and under). Hanukkah Klezmer Brunch Buffet is offered Sunday, December 9 and Sunday, December 16, 10am-1pm, at City Winery Chicago, 1200 W. Randolph Street. Music begins at 10:30am.
Balkano, a Chicago Klezmer band with a Balkan twist, performs its repertoire of Bulgarian wedding music and Turkish gypsy tunes on December 9, while the Chicago Klezmer Ensemblebrings traditional European Klezmer back on December 16.
“We want to establish Klezmer Brunch as the must-experience brunch tradition in Chicago for both locals and tourists,” says City Winery founder and CEO Michael Dorf. “When I started Klezmer Brunch four years ago at City Winery New York, I feared Klezmer was becoming a lost art. It’s turned out to be one of the hottest tickets in Manhattan.”
Klezmer music has its origins in Eastern Europe and is a musical tradition in Judaism, written for dances and religious ceremonies. Klezmer ensembles typically comprise violins, piano, tsimbl (a kind of dulcimer) and, most importantly, clarinet. The music is lively, melodic and irresistible to dance to, and often mimics the human voice in tone and musicality. Each week, the Klezmer Brunch Series features different artists to showcase the genre’s range. Klezmer Brunch hours are always Sundays, 10am-1pm, with live music starting at 10:30am.
